12 Day Stopping Diabetes Program

What is the 12-day Stopping Diabetes Program?

Our original program is still the most complete guide to starting your journey to stop diabetes before it stops you.

It begins with your 12 day get-away. 12 days where the office, housework, family, and civic responsibilities are left behind, and your only focus is your diabetes. 12 days to renew, re-energize, and re-vitalize your body, soul and spirit. When’s the last time you spent 12 days focusing on renewing your health?

You simply thrive in our 'training center' atmosphere. Of course there’ll be classes presented by our health professionals. There’ll be one-on-one appointments and group workshops with physicians, nutritionists, fitness experts and behaviorists. You’ll make new friends and be able to network with others who have diabetes, learning in a collective experience format as you watch the professionals model the lifestyle for you. But the best part of it all is that you’ll get to see our professional staff on campus. You’ll have a chance to sit and eat meals with them. You get a chance to pick their brain. Imagine…what would you ask your physician if you got the chance to eat together sometime?

You leave behind the theory of what you need to do and embrace the experience of doing it. You probably already know how important it is to stay active and eat right. But perhaps you haven't realized there are many other lifestyle factors that play a vital role in stopping diabetes. So how do you put this puzzle together? Not only will we show you what it means in our presentations and workshops, but you get to experience it daily. From the stretching class in the morning to the hands on cooking training to the label reading exercise with your nutritionist to deciphering your lab results with the physician. What does this mean for you? It means we take the guesswork out. It is about working smarter, not harder. When you’re back on the shuttle heading home, you’ll finally know exactly HOW to do what has been puzzling you all along, because you’ve been doing it for 12 days.

We come up with a tailor fit health plan just for you. Our medical staff runs a complete set of labs for you. Some you’ve probably never heard of. But here’s the kicker. The results tell our physician not only that you have diabetes, but WHY you have diabetes. Did you know there are three possibilities as to the exact cause? Best of all, you get to know EXACTLY how your diabetes is progressing, what you need to do to change its course, and our physician will work with you to create a plan to get you the best results possible. It doesn’t end there though. The nutrition staff, fitness staff, and behavioral team work within the physician’s guidelines to give you the knowledge, tools, and support you need to get your life back. Most clients are surprised how much progress they can make in a few short days.

The good news is: You are in charge of your diabetes. You have the power to choose things that stop your diabetes or make it worse. And we teach you how to put that power to work. Do you still need your physician? Of course you do! His medical consults serve as guidelines, but it’s really up to you how to stop this disease. And once you know how, it’ll make all the difference.

We know your biggest challenge will be how you succeed at home, that’s why we support you for 12 months. It’s not easy changing your habits. And doing it around family, friends, and old hang-outs makes it even more challenging. Which is why we team you up with a health coach for an entire year.  Your training experiences continue through monthly phone presentations with your class. And you have the advantage of using your coach to get answers to your questions, get through life’s roadblocks, and get motivated to continue your improvement.

That’s it. It’s simple, powerful and based on 12 year’s worth of experience and results.

    What kind of results?

Here’s what some of our alumni have been able to accomplish:

    • Martha lowered her cholesterol 40 points, significantly reduced her insulin usage and renewed her sense of purpose.
    • Brenda went from wearing size 22W and feeling exhausted every night to size 12 and abundant energy.
    • Larry reversed the pain in his feet and had his first good night's sleep in months.
    • Joe reduced his weight by 35 pounds and learned how to make healthy food choices when eating out.
    • Jan stopped her chronic pain and severe immobility and now enjoys daily 3-mile walks and virtual freedom from pain.

    More About the Program:

    Program Activities

Services listed with + are available on an a la carte basis.

Physician & Medical Services – A board-certified physician will provide you with the time and help you need to get to the root issue of what is causing your diabetes to progress, instead of just medicating its symptoms.

    • A health history review by your program doctor will help establish the most effective starting point for your program experience
    • Small group medical visits with your doctor will provide you refreshing insights to your daily improvement

Laboratory Services – A complete suite of laboratory tests are provided as part of the medical services. The results will guide your physician in the treatment of your health, and will enable him/her to explain what each test and your results mean about your health and what you can do about it. This allows YOU, to make informed decisions about your health and puts you in control of your diabetes care.

The following test are included in our services:

    • CBC (complete blood count) - gives information on bone marrow function, and any indicators of blood abnormalities
    • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel - a measure of several blood "chemistries", including blood sugar, electrolytes, kidney and liver function
    • Hemoglobin A1c – measures  average blood sugar readings over the previous three months and is a relative indicator of overall blood sugar control.  The higher the number,  the greater the risk of diabetic complications
    • Serum insulin level - when analyzed along with the corresponding fasting blood sugar, the degree of insulin resistance in the body can be determined
    • Lipid profile - measures total cholesterol, "good" and "bad" cholesterol, and cardiovascular "risk ratio" which helps to estimate the risk of heart attack
    • TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) - a measurement of the activity of the thyroid gland, and the potential necessity for thyroid supplementation
    • Urinalysis - screens for infection, the presence of blood, protein, and other substances that could be indicative of kidney damage

    • 25-hydroxy Vitamin D level - this hormone vitamin is important in regulating calcium, keeping bones healthy, preventing various cancers, and controlling auto-immune system diseases

Optional lab tests - there are a couple more lab tests we may recommend after your initial lab work depending on your clinical circumstances.  Even though they are not part of the standard lab package and additional fees would apply, neither of these tests will be performed without first discussing it with you and getting your permission.

    • Serum C-peptide level - this can help determine the approximate function of the pancreas, and may help the physician know whether or not insulin is indicated as a treatment recommendation.+
    • GAD-65 antibody level - can be used to help determine if there are antibodies directed against the pancreas, thus leading to a failure of the pancreas to produce adequate amounts of insulin.+
