5th Grade Diabetes Education

About the Program

The CDC reports that 1 out of 3 males and 2 of 5 females born in 2000 will develop diabetes in their lifetime. If your child is of African American, Native American descent, or a Hispanic American male their risk is 2 out of 5. As a Hispatic American female born in 2000, her chances of developing type 2 diabetes is 1 of 2.

We don’t like those statistics and we’re doing something about it. Starting in November 2008, Lifestyle Center of America is taking 5th grade diabetes education programs across the country, starting with Oklahoma and Texas.

In Each ABC’s for Preventing Type 2 Diabetes Program:

  • 5th graders are introduced to the diabetes problem and shown the impact it has on them and their families. The equation of energy in equals energy out becomes the basis of what type 2 diabetes is and how they can stop it during the “Balancing the Energyâ€? presentation.
  • Children take the journey through the digestive track during the “What’s In That Foodâ€? demonstration. Using problem solving, they practice knowing which type of snacks and foods are more beneficial for their healthy growth.
  • Staying active should be a no brainer for children…the “How Busy Is Your Bodyâ€? exercise tags and chases kids though understanding activities and games that keeps their brain active and their body busy burning all the energy consumed during the day.
  • Each child has the opportunity to learn what their blood sugar is and if they are in peril of developing type two diabetes based on the current reading with the “Teeny Tiny Blood Screeningâ€?

At the end of the day, students are armed with the information they need to protect themselves from diabetes, along with information for their parents on practical steps they can take to keep their family healthy, happy and strong.
